Welcome

Hi, I am Duncan MacArthur. For many years I was a photographer by profession but from now on I have become more of a photographer by passion. Born in Scotland, I moved to France as a young man, and it was here, in the French Alps, that photography became my full time job.

For many years I freelanced within the travel industry, photographing around the world for brochures, catalogues, adverts and guidebooks. I worked with medium format spool film, each image a precise singular act. These were the days of analogue photography, an important time for me, shaping both my eye and of course my discipline.

I still take all of my photographs in this analogue way, though be it with a digital camera. I shoot “one shot” photography using tripod and filters for precise composition and exposure. I make my pictures on site and in camera and it is the creation of each image on location that brings me so much pleasure.

20 years ago I opened “The Gallery”, my own photography gallery and printing studio here in the Queyras park, exhibiting and selling my own work. It became a must visit destination for many visitors. I also printed work for other photographers, for their exhibitions and clients. It was exciting, exacting and demanding work, it kept me closely tied to the craft, though often too far away from my own creative practice.

At the end of 2025 I sold out and stepped away from my gallery and printing studio to afford myself more time for my own photography, and life in general at an easier pace, while hopefully reconnecting with nature.

I love the sea, the mountains and wide open, empty, wild spaces. I enjoy simple, minimal scenes where light, shape, space, and balance speak to me clearly. I like to photograph movement and passing time.

On this website I show you my favourite photographs. All are available as fine art prints, they are produced by only me with the same care and precision that has defined all my work over many years.

I have always taken great pride and pleasure from seeing my work find its place in your homes and workplaces, embellishing your spaces, growing on and enriching those amongst you who have chosen to live along with it, breathing fresh air and reverie into your lives.

Thank you for being here and enjoy the fresh air.

Duncan.
